General Information

The course offered leads to the Sail Canada 'Start Keelboat Sailing' qualification. Successful participants will be equipped to safely crew a keelboat in familiar waters with wind speeds up to ~20kts during daylight hours. The syllabus will include motoring, docking/undocking, all points of sail, tacking, gybing, reefing, anchoring and crew overboard. Ashore - two x three hour lessons typically held either during the evening from 6 until 9pm or during the day 9 until 12pm and 1 until 4pm Afloat - four x three hour lessons which may be held during the evenings and/or the day time. Dates and times will be arranged at mutual convenience of the instructor, the participants and the weather!. This flexible approach enables people's varying needs to be accommodated dependent upon their availability (weekdays, weekends, evenings etc). The 'Afloat' training will make use of the PEYC Tanzer 22 keelboat and will will take place in Picton Bay There will be a maximum of three participants on the boat with the instructor. Fees Member $340.00 + HST Non-member $440.00 + HST Sail Canada ‘Basic Cruising Skills’ reference book $29.99 + HST For non members the fee includes membership of PEYC for three months and entitles them to use the associated facilities. The fee also includes the use of the training boat for 12 hours after successful completion of course provided that the instructor is satisfied that the participants are competent to sail the boat unaccompanied.. In order to do this at least one person on the boat must have obtained their Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) The course is taught by a Sail Canada qualified instructor. Participants who successfully complete the course (theory and practice) will be awarded the Sail Canada 'Start Keelboat Sailing' (SKS) qualification. We aim to make it an enjoyable experience and previous participants over the have been very positive about it.
